African Textile Color vs Texture
Fashion is ephemeral and exclusive. The business of fashion is to create trends; forever marking a place in “fashion history.” 2012 seems to be all about African textile; brightly colored prints and patterns. The European take on African textile is interesting and in some cases beautiful. However, there is something missing; that is to say texture. The fusion of textures in African textile and art is most impressive. Any designer can learn the proper usage of color. However, there is no “texture wheel.” The melding of different textures is a difficult art-form. It requires a presentation of the artists’ visual and physical inclinations. This aspect of African textile is sophisticated, and it should also be celebrated in fashion.
